Born in the hills of Arkansas and spending much of my youth amid the cactus and mesquite of south Texas, my spiritual food, as a young man, was from the haranguing voices of preachers screaming hellfire and brimstone. The lowly Jesus seemed to stand in stark contrast with the Old Testament God.
